03 September 2025

On the 21st July 2025, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) announced a significant leap forward in tax administration, introducing an online Pay As You Earn (PAYE) service designed to empower over 35 million UK workers to take charge of their tax affairs.

This marks a pivotal advancement in HMRC’s ambitious Transformation Roadmap, which has set a clear trajectory towards becoming a digital-first organisation by 2030.

What’s new for PAYE taxpayers?

Full control via digital channels:

PAYE workers can now view and update critical tax information, such as income details, allowances, reliefs, and job-related expenses, directly through their Tax Account on the HMRC app.

Streamlines access and transparency:

The service provides an intuitive, real-time interface which minimises the need for traditional interactions like phone calls or completing paper forms.

Why it matters

The initiative is more than just a digital update; it’s a strategic move forward.

  • Enhancing user autonomy: Taxpayers gain clarity over their tax position and the means to adjust it swiftly and precisely.

  • Boosting convenience and speed: Digital access allows immediate updates without waiting for letters or agents.

  • Future-proofing: Aligned with the vision that 90% of HMRC customer interactions will be digital by 2030.

A broader transformation

This PAYE overhaul is just one element of HMRC’s sweeping Transformation Roadmap, which spans over 50 digital projects aimed at modernising the tax and customs systems. Some of the key highlights include:

  • Cost efficiencies: Transitioning away from paper correspondence is projected to save around £50 million a year.

  • Advanced technology integration: HMRC is ramping up its use of AI technology, covering areas like digital assistants, internal support tools and compliance systems that bolster fraud detection and risk monitoring.

  • Greater user inclusivity: HMRC ensures that essential paper-based communication will remain available for those who are digitally excluded, ensuring no taxpayer is left behind.
