Did you know that 46% of qualified accountants are women? This statistic highlights the significant progress made in our profession, yet it also underscores the need for continued efforts to support and advance women in accounting. The journey towards gender equality has been long and challenging. Remarkably, the first woman to become a chartered accountant was Mary Harris Smith, who achieved this milestone in 1920 at the age of 75. This was 33 years after she set up her own accountancy practice in 1887. Her perseverance and determination paved the way for future generations of women in the field.
