On a cold, crisp afternoon in Kidderminster, the newly formed Haines Watts East football team played their first ever game against Ormerod Rutter (OR) Accountants.

Having been expertly navigated to the pitch by our friends at Roy’s Minibus, the lads pulled on their “Away kit” for the first time and looked rather resplendent.

The team started brightly with Harry commanding between the sticks and the back four expertly marshalled by Alfie and Rob with Conor on the right and Euan on the left. Matt P & Matt C (Chevs) were looking to dominate in centre mid with George & Ashley providing a threat from the wings. Tom and Omar started up front before an early reshuffle to counter the opposition formation, seeing Tom drop back to midfield leaving Omar to run the channels all afternoon keeping their defence busy and showing some lovely touches on the ball.

We took an early lead with Matt P stepping inside the defence before smashing the ball home into the bottom corner. Alfie then took it upon himself to double our score with an unbelievable free kick from the half way line, somehow spotting the keeper 2 yards off his line and sailing under the bar. With a 2-0 lead, the team should have asserted some control, but the opposition came rotating back and had the best of the half scoring just before half time, halving their deficit.

After a while, a few players were starting to flake (naming no names) and the bench was called for, with Arthur and Henry joining the fray before Kyle entered the game at the start of the second half, all of whom contributed “manfully” to the team.

The game was fairly even with some tough challenges being thrown around by both sides. OR then took the lead with two quick-fire goals to make it 3-2, and showed no signs of stopping. It was only some excellent work by our defence keeping them out and us in the game…

Our efforts paid off with an equaliser from a penalty after a foul on Alfie, with Matt slotting home the spot kick to level up the game. Both teams had chances to win it but in the end, the game ended in a 3-3 drawer and off to penalties to decide the winner.

The boys were faultless from the start, with Tom, Alfie, Rob (with a high risk hit & hope) and Omar converting their kicks and Harry dominating the goal to unnerve the OR takers with two of them blazing over to win the game for the boys!!

After the game, we shared a couple of beers with the opposition before heading back to Northampton with an unbeaten record to protect!

Bring on the next game!!

Following the acquisition, Tom continued to drive the growth of the Property department and was involved in a number of mergers and acquisitions to grow the wider property services offering at Bellrock. Tom subsequently joined the Haines Watts team in 2017.

I’m a keen sportsman in my spare time, playing both football and golf, as well as travelling with my young family.
