National Apprenticeship Week: Q&A with Jordan Wood

06 February 2020

February 3rd-9th is National Apprenticeship Week. The 9-day event celebrates apprentices, and the value of apprenticeships, nationwide. To mark the week, we caught up with Jordan Wood, Tax Incentives and Reliefs Semi Senior, who joined Haines Watts as an apprentice in 2015.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in accounting?

I've always had an interest in business and what makes companies tick. I think this has stemmed from seeing my parents run their business - I've always had a natural intrigue into how and why they run their company. A career in accounting struck me as a good use of my background knowledge and interest, coupled with my outgoing personality, because at the end of the day we are selling our service and advice.

What made you choose Haines Watts?

I started the apprenticeship application process through a company called Access Training. They interviewed me and shortlisted a number of positions, in a range of different companies, both internal accounts and external business advisors. I researched each company and read-up on each role. It was clear that for me, Haines Watts were the firm to join, due to their local values and national outreach. From my initial interview with Access and my formal interview with Donna (Regional Managing Partner, Haines Watts North East), it was evident that Haines Watts were going to be a very supportive employer, as well as giving me the opportunity to grow.

What's your favourite part of the job?

It's no secret that my favourite part of my job is going out and seeing clients. Whether they are start-ups or established companies with a number of years under their belt, I love hearing how their business works and what motivates them. In doing so, I look to establish a good working relationship with them, in order to tailor the support we provide to them as advisors.

What are your aspirations for the future?

Short term, following the completion of my AAT, I'm going to continue with more (yes more) exams. I've enrolled with the CIOT to start my ATT/CTA pathway (tax exams in layman's terms) and will be sitting the first of them at the end of the year. Long term, with the help of my studies, I hope to progress within the company and move up the ladder to a senior leadership role.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out as an apprentice/considering an apprenticeship within the industry?

If you're considering an apprenticeship in the industry, don't be scared to ask questions. It may sound like a basic piece of advice but on the job learning, like an apprenticeship, can provide invaluable insight into the industry. By asking questions, you're not only proving your interest in the subject and your eagerness to learn, but you are also open to receiving knowledge that may not necessarily be available in a text book.
