Building the future: Apprenticeship Week 2021

10 February 2021

For the 14th annual National Apprenticeship Week, we are celebrating apprenticeships and how they “Build the Future”. This week gives us a chance to reflect on apprenticeships and appreciate the positive impact they have. As part of this, we we will be highlighting some of the motivating stories from our people across the business. We spoke to George Murphy, Accounts and Auditing Trainee, about his apprenticeship experience while working with our Leeds team.

What made you choose a career in accountancy?

I really love problem solving, so I knew being able to find ways around a client’s financial challenge would keep me engaged. The fact that I could learn about so many different industries and businesses was a massive plus from me. I knew that having that variety in my work was important and I wouldn’t get bored of dealing with the same thing every day.

Why did Haines Watts stand out to you?

I liked that I wouldn’t be siloed into one area at Haines Watts and I would get to experience many different aspects of accountancy. Other companies were more restrictive in what they offered and I didn’t want to be stuck in one area. As I progressed in the application, it was clear that Haines Watts has a really friendly and supportive atmosphere so I’d feel at home.

What is your favourite part of your role?

My favourite part is definitely getting out and visiting clients with the team. It’s great when there’s crossover with a client’s business and my own interests, like fitness or the motor trade. Chatting to them has given me a real feel for how these businesses work behind the scenes. It also means no two days are the same and you're not chained to a desk all of the time, which is great.

What is your plan for the next few years?

Out of all the areas I’ve experienced, I feel that auditing is my favourite and where my skills are most suited. So, I’m aiming to continue to my training and pass all of the exams, which will allow me to gain more responsibility and work my way up the ladder.

If someone was considering an apprenticeship in accountancy, what would your advice be?

My main advice would be to do your research and find the right company. As long as you’re with a supportive team it will be a really rewarding experience. Don’t be disheartened if you feel overwhelmed to begin with, stick with it and ask for help when you need to. That's what you're there for at the end of the day.
