Clubs and Societies

Recent changes in the regulatory framework for clubs and associations have given rise to a range of new possibilities for some organisations within this sector.

The extension of gift aid to donations to community amateur sports clubs has provided these organisations with the means to maximise the funding available from individual donors in support of their activities. The removal of tax on low levels of profits within these clubs will also increase the funds available for sport.

The extension of charitable status set out in the 2006 Charities Act will allow some organisations to qualify as charities for the first time. The new legal forms e.g. the Community Interest Company may provide alternative constitutional structures for some associations.

On the other hand, for clubs and associations outside these changes, the Inland Revenue is becoming more closely focussed on such issues as non-member trading and mutuality which increases the risk of surpluses being subject to taxation.
