Don't trust your backup! Having a backup of your critical data is obviously important, but testing that the backup has worked is equally important. Backups can and do fail, especially where the media is ageing, or is done on media such as CD ROMs or even tapes. Testing your backup should be done regularly, by restoring such data to a temporary folder. If the restore works and the files are accessible, then you have peace of mind that your backup is working.
