Paul qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972 and went to work for a global accountancy firm in their Paris office. After three years in the profession he moved into industry as Financial Director of the European Arm of a Major US Medical company. He moved back to the UK in 1984 to start his own accountancy practice and joined with Haines Watts in 2002.
Paul greatly enjoys assisting the owners of small to medium businesses, helping them to realise their own goals. To strengthen this Paul undertook a two year course at the University of East Anglia where he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 1997. He is also a member of the Institute of Management Consultants.
As Senior Partner at HW, Paul uses his knowledge and experience to ensure that all offices maintain high service levels and that each office takes advantage of the latest technological and financial developments giving a solid base to ensure we provide successful strategies for all clients.
Paul is an experienced skier and is currently undertaking his Coastal Skipper qualification.

Matthew has been with the firm for over 15 years, qualifying in 2001 and joining the partnership in 2003. Matthew is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Association of Chartered Accountants and has a strong background in accounting systems, management accounts and provision of the firms auditing services.
Matthews enjoys acting for the owners of small and medium sized businesses, assisting them in all areas of accountancy, business and tax advice.
Matthew is also increasingly involved in developing the practice in and around East Anglia to ensure that the firms clients have access to local offices and staff as and when required.
Matthew enjoys riding his motorbike in competitions when time permits!

After graduating from Loughborough University with a Masters Degree in Civil & Building Engineering in June 2000 Anthony worked as a graduate civil and structural engineer when he gained valuable experience in business and business systems.
Anthony joined Haines Watts in June 2005 to retrain as an accountant and worked initially in general practice before moving to commerce to work as a Management Accountant and Financial Coordinator. Since then Anthony has qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant and re-joined Haines Watts in March 2009 as an Audit Manager.
Anthony specialises in the manufacturing and construction sectors and has a strong background in developing bespoke business tools.
As Audit Manager Anthony is responsible for the organisation and administration of all Audits. Having worked for a multinational manufacturing company, Anthony has solid experience, from a clients perspective of the needs, challenges and the obstacles which many medium sized business face when it comes to Audit, systems and processes.

Paul qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972 and has been involved in general practice with local firms throughout his career. With over 30 years of dealing with the affairs of owner-managed businesses and companies Paul has a wealth of knowledge and experience to ensure that clients receive the right proactive tax advice tailored to their specific needs.
He regularly assists clients in dealing with HM Revenue & Customs enquiries and investigations in relation to PAYE, VAT, Personal and Corporation Tax. There has been a huge increase in these matters in recent years and Paul’s knowledge and experience in handling them ensures our clients are exceptionally well represented.
He is also able to advise fully on all Capital Tax situations including Capital Gains Tax on disposals, Company reorganisations and Inheritance Tax planning.
Paul is married with one son and in his leisure time plays badminton and golf and also enjoys gardening, reading and crosswords.
He is also a dedicated Norwich City season ticket holder having supported the club for the past 50 years.

Gained experience in a tax department at a local firm of accountants dealing with tax affairs for Small Businesses , Paul qualified as a member of the Association of Tax Technicians in June 2006 .Paul spent 5 years working initially as Technical helpline manager, and then senior manager in a technical support team. Part of this role encompassed visiting nationwide offices to improve the commercial efficiencies of their tax departments, and developing articles for both the marketing and training functions. Paul was in charge of the e-learning site for staff and franchisees, and contributed heavily to training materials used by owners and staff. Paul has significant experience in a wide range of personal and corporate tax issues and planning possibilities, as well as good working knowledge of tax efficient planning schemes for owner managed businesses, capital gains tax mitigation, tax efficient remuneration packages, and residency and domicile issues.

Ed has worked for Paul Sumpter for 11 years now, 8 of those for Haines Watts. Ed qualified in 2007 and has been working within the practice at management level for the last 6 years. As senior client account manager Ed is on hand to advise and help our clients with management accounting, financial planning and forecasting, as well as training and advice on using sage and other accounting programs.
He also takes an active role in the guidance and training of other staff lending his knowledge and experience to those who studying for their qualifications.
